Background
Professional experience informing the work of Laboratorys and Librarys.
Ian Tan is the Founder and Director of Laboratorys and Librarys. He is a senior business leader whose work focuses on translating strategy into practical operating systems that allow organisations to function with greater clarity, discipline, and continuity. His career has spanned several industries including financial services, advertising, passenger vehicles, and heavy commercial vehicles, providing exposure to different organisational environments and operating models.
Over more than a decade within a commercial vehicle business unit in Southeast Asia, he has contributed to the design and embedding of organisational capabilities spanning commercial development, governance, digitalisation, and analytics. His responsibilities have included custodianship of the organisation’s operating philosophy and retail operating model, ensuring that these principles are translated into governance structures, commercial workflows, and everyday ways of working.
Within the commercial domain, he developed a structured demand-generation system integrating analytics-driven targeting, digital campaigns and a Contact Centre prospecting capability operated by the team. The system provides consistent pipeline visibility and generates approximately one qualified lead per day within a B2B commercial vehicle environment.
Alongside commercial development, he introduced a structured Citizen Data Scientist programme to build internal capability in data analysis, automation, and predictive modelling. These capabilities support operational decision making as well as sustainability-related analysis, including estimating potential CO₂ emissions under different vehicle usage scenarios for both internal planning and customer advisory discussions.
Throughout this period he has served as a member of the Executive / Group Management Team with shared responsibility for business unit performance and P&L governance.
Organisational Capability
Behind these initiatives has been a long-term effort to build organisational capability through people. As responsibilities expanded across marketing, commercial development, digitalisation initiatives, analytics capability, and demand-generation activities, emphasis was placed on developing individual capability so that the systems introduced could be sustained and continually improved by the team.
Taken together, this work reflects a consistent focus on designing systems that allow teams to operate effectively over time — combining governance, commercial flow, data capability, and people development into a coherent operating architecture.
Continuing Exploration
These professional experiences form only one part of a longer personal exploration into how systems endure and how individuals navigate uncertainty and complexity. The ideas developed through Laboratorys and Librarys draw not only from organisational work, but also from broader life experiences and reflections that shaped the development of frameworks such as Thin-Core and BMII.
The work at Laboratorys and Librarys continues to explore how leadership, strategy, and systems can maintain continuity in an increasingly complex world.
